It’s 3 am. Another early morning feeding. I have my 8-week-old son draped across my chest, heaving milk-drink little sighs. He tends to sleep better if I let him lie on me for a bit after nursing before setting him down in the bassinet. I do what has become my routine for these midnight hours—I open my phone one-handed and start browsing.
Thanks for sharing! This feels in direct conversation with the Messy Middle podcast update I recorded yesterday. I've upgraded you to paid for 30 days so you can listen. Solidarity in embracing the mess. 🕸️
Thank you so much Sarah! I’ll definitely check your podcast out 😊 I feel like I’m seeing more and more people talk about embracing mess and a less curated version of ourselves. Maybe we’re all just fed up with the polished front of Instagram, but I think it’s a healthy change overall
Beautiful messy chaotic truth... I feel soothed in my soul when I read your words because it’s real and let’s me be real too. This is human. This is motherhood. You are honouring your creativity while raising a very tiny human and that needs to be honoured. Keep doing it messy. The worlds needs unpolished. You are doing amazingly! Xx
Thank you Lauren, I’m so glad it resonated with you 🥰 I love your thought that “the world needs unpolished” - that’s what we’ve all be doing for so long isn’t it? Shining ourselves up to put on display? I’m glad it feels like the tide is turning and more people are leaning into the unpolished
I feel this push and pull so keenly! When I write about creative writing, craft, publishing, and author careers, I used to feel like my ‘voice’ had to come from the other side of success, the kind of voice that had it ‘figured out.’ More and more, the tone of conversation I use around this subjects is as down-to-earth as I can muster, even if it sounds amateurish at times, because it’s authentic. Through authenticity comes connection, or so I hope. That’s when people respond to most. 💕
Totally resonate with that Abigail. I often feel like I have to have it figured out to be able to share my thoughts on something - silly, since I love hearing other people talk from the messy, realness of being in-progress. It's just another form of imposter syndrome, isn't it? We assume that people won't want to hear *our* story, even if we enjoy hearing other people's.
Oh Kerani - please know Laura and I are trying with heart to re write the rules around this space of Artist/ mother/ professionalism - we are so grateful for your connection to us and SORRY for the deadlines - something we wouldn’t ordinarily bring to our Company of Two space - sending such gentle support for you, for your words for your art and here’s to the snippets of balance and beauty in it all. With love xx
No need to apologize at all Claire ♥️ that’s part of the balance isn’t it? Figuring out how to manage some deadlines and degrees of structure while also embracing the flexibility and humanness of motherhood and art. I’m so appreciative of the space that you and Laura have created! I was just re-listening to your honesty episode and it really hit home. I’m glad that I’m finding more creative moms who openly talk about the mess and the struggle

Aww ⭕️ me too!! ✨✨ Laura and I have done a fair few honest whatsapp voice notes sometimes I think we should publish these 😆
That could be a really lovely post for Company of Two!
